With three seating rows, the S sedan will be able to carry up to seven people. There are three battery pack choices that will offer a range of 160, 230, or 300 miles per charge. It can be recharged from a 120V, 208V, or 240V outlet or quick-charged from an external supply in 45 minutes.
Tesla claims the Model S can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, and it will have a top electronic speed of 130 mph. Inside there is a 17-inch touchscreen monitor with in-car Internet connectivity, creating the possibility to access Google Maps or Pandora Radio. Drivers can also check the car's state of charge remotely on the iPhone.
With the 300-mile range battery, the price is expected to be $88,000, but smaller, less expensive battery packs would save up to $20,000. Plus, there is a $7,500 federal tax credit.
Reservations on the S started last spring and production will begin in early 2012 with the help of a $350 million dollar loan from the Department of Energy to build a plant in California.
